Program Introduction
The Scientific Council of Psychiatry, under the Arab Board of Health Specializations, aims to graduate competent physicians capable of providing high-quality psychiatric services. The training period lasts for four years (forty-eight months) in recognized hospitals and training centers.
Training Duration
Four years of structured and supervised psychiatric training in accredited hospitals.
Training Environment
Training is conducted in accredited hospitals under structured educational supervision.
Full-Time Commitment
The trainee must be fully enrolled and committed throughout the entire duration of the program.
Patient Responsibility
The trainee is responsible for patient care while working under continuous supervision.
Examination System and Components
The primary language of examination for the Arab Board is English. The assessment consists of the following parts:
Part One Exam
Candidates apply after completing a minimum of one training year. Exam includes multiple-choice questions and covers basic sciences such as psychology, neurosciences, endocrinology, pharmacology, and more. The exam is held once a year.
Part Two Exam
Held once annually after completing four years of training. Requires a satisfactory report and Logbook submission. The exam is a final written exam.
Clinical and Oral Exam
For candidates who pass the written exam, they proceed to the clinical and oral exam. The written exam pass is valid for 3 years.
Examination System & Components
The assessment system for the Egyptian Fellowship certificate consists of three main exams that must be successfully passed to obtain the certification.
First Part Exam
Prerequisites: Minimum 6 months of training, TOEFL 500, computer courses. Master's holders exempt if within 5 years.
Attempts: 3 + 1 exceptional attempt. Delays after 1 year count as attempt used.
Exam Structure: Two papers. Paper 1: MCQs (2 hrs). Paper 2: Short-answer, problem-solving, EMIs (2 hrs).
Second Part Exam
Prerequisites: Pass First Part, complete training period, submit logbook.
Attempts: 3 + 1 exceptional attempt.
Exam Structure: Four papers: 2 MCQ (2 hrs each), 1 short-essay (2 hrs), 1 clinical commentary/MCQ paper.
Third Part Exam (Clinical)
Prerequisites & Attempts: Pass Second Part, 3 + 1 exceptional attempt.
Exam Structure: Clinical & oral exam including:
- Long Clinical Case: History, examination, treatment plan discussion.
- Short Case Examination: Two short cases for routine consultation skills.
- Objective Structured Practical Exam (OSPE): 5-8 stations.
- Oral Exam (VIVA): Case management, diagnostic & therapeutic decisions, communication skills.
